We love Thai Airways! What a flight to Bangkok!
Our journey started sadly leaving Nepal but once we were airborne our excitement grew heavily. Thai Airways = Amazing. A less then half full plane with a row to ourselfs we enjoyed the latest Hollywood blockbusters along with some delicious in flight food and unlimited free alcohol! Oh what a flight and to top it all off we were on our way to Thailand! Yes!
That evening we found ourself on Khoa San road in Bangkok for the second time but for the first time together. After an excellent curry we strolled the length of the short but incredibly vibrate street and by the time we arrived at our door we had, bracelets, the all important magnet bottle opener and tickets for the following morning to Seim Reap. Sorted.
The next morning we were greated by a crazy 69 year old Thai man who was to be our trip "manager" 5 mins of slick speak later and he managed to part us of $30 each for our Cambodia visas. It was only when he didn't quite jump on the bus with us as expected and we sped of into the distance without even a receipt we realised we'd be scammed! It fitted all the criteria at the time but 2 exhausted travellers at 6 in the morning didn't quite see it coming like they should have.
Four hours later we found ourselfs at the Cambodian border, luckily to our great relief a young Cambodian joined the bus and proclaimed to be our escort a friend of Mr 69 years old! phew! A bus scam, visa scam, currency scam, taxi scam and cigarette scam later we were safely across the border and thrown unceremoniously into a taxi with two Canadians we counted our pennies and exchanged stories. With 5 scams attempted were in the green......
Having arrived in Siem Reap 3 hours later and despite the driver having specific instructions on which hotel to drop us at we found ourselves in an alley in the pooring rain talking to a local tuk tuk driver who was trying to sell us tours of Angkor Wat. Queue scam number 6! This was the last thing we needed and after some negotiation we managed to convince him to take us to our hotel. Having checked in we noticed the driver was stood firmly hovering over our shoulders, we approached him politely and said that we would not be taking him up on his offer especially After our hostel had quoted half the price! This did not go down well! He flew into a rage and with great venom through gritted teeth told us to "f*** off" whilst lunging forward, Showing great restraint we moved away up to the restaurant rather than the more inviting option, heading towards him at speed fists clenched!
We settled in to a pretty happening traveling bar at the hotel having survived a barage of scammers and cheats, The sky was grey and the heavens were open but we optimistically booked a tour of Angkor Wat with a 4am start in the morning. We were sure of one thing Cambodia definitely had more to offer...
