A 'day at sea' today as we wake up to Glacier Bay for a scenic trip in this part of the Glacier Bay National Park. The ship got quite close to the various glaciers in the two inlets that we entered but it is virtually impossible to describe the beauty and wildness of this place. It is VERY remote and it is a real privilege to see the glaciers, and wildlife including seals and whales although there is a sense of loss as we are told by the Glacier Bay Park rangers who come on board to narrate for us, that the glaciers are disappearing quite quickly.
We are also told that the weather today is unseasonably warm (at 13C) but it is still cold on deck and we make sure we are rugged up (and drink plenty of hot chocolate).
As an aside, a couple of 'ship' observations:
- there are mats in the elevators with the name of the day on them. We all laughed at this initially but these mats have become essential as our days are so full it really is difficult to remember what day it actually is!
- the food is incessant and we have attempted to partially offset our increased consumption by using the stairs rather than the lifts. There are two downsides to this - the first is that it's an awfully long way from deck 1 (where our room is) to decks 8 and 9 (where most of the activities occur) and we are breathing deeply and feeling the burn by the time we reach the top decks. And secondly we do not get to see the mats in the elevators so we are generally at a loss as to what day it is!
- as with our other cruises, it really is a fabulous holiday with only one unpack/pack required. And the hardest decision is what, if any activity to undertake and what to have for lunch! What more can we say?
