Day 121 - Quorn via the Salt Lakes and Glendambo- Tuesday 14th February 2012
Today was the big driving day, Doc, our new tour guide (he was called Doc because he looked like Doc the mad scientist from Back To the Future) told us that we would be driving in the bus for 8 hours so we could spend the following day at the Flinders Mountain range the following day. So we started early, waved goodbye to Coober Pedy and continue our journey south.
After about 3 hours and a quick 10 minute stop at the fuel station we arrived at some ancient salt lakes. We had been told about salt lakes in Bolivia but didn't know that there were also lots of salt lakes in Australia so both Soph and I were really looking forward to them. As we pulled up the weather was amazing and the blue sky was just scattered with light misty clouds that made the salt plans look really bright. We all grabbed our water and walked down to the plans. Salt lakes are remnants of an inland sea that have since evaporated leaving a bright white layer of salt. In photos, because of the vast bright white salt, you lose the sight of depth perception - this makes for some really funny photos like Sophie standing on my hand etc. CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS!!
Back in the van for some more hours and we passed through Glendambo (population 30!) and Pt Augusta before arriving in Quorn, the quaint and historical railway township nestled at the entrance to the Richman Valley. Our place for the night was the historical "Mill" which was really nice; here we shared a dorm with Stefan, Merle and Mareille hoping that none of them would snore!!
We all chucked our bags in the room and picked our beds then headed out to Warren gorge to try and spot some yellow footed rock wallaby's and kangaroos. Well, we saw plenty of roos but only 1 wallaby, but the walk through the gorge was well worth it. The night's dinner was an old fashioned aussie BBQ so we got some beers and wine on the way back. Once back we showered and some of us started preparing the salad and laying the table - I grabbed the tongs and headed to the BBQ area! We had burgers, sausages and some kangaroo marinated in a rich plum sauce - yum! The BBQ ended at about 11pm when we realised that all the beer and wine was gone!
