After finally crossing the border of our homeland Victoria for a very long time..... We were greeted by beautiful pine plantations and Tristan chewing Tara's ear off explaining the reasons for the planting and pruning, etc...okay thats enough.
We made it South Australia- after a quick stop at the border sign for a photo or twenty. Next stop Mt Gambier. The home of the infamous "Blue Lake", a stunning sight that lets face it- never seems to bore but always seases to amaze.
After a brief stop and a few pics it was back onto the highway, or so we thought. Siri decided to take us on a back blocks tour of Mt Gambier.
Next Stop Robe. As we pulled into the sleepy little fishing villiage of Robe, we were stunned by the beauty of the old limestone cottage which also doubled as the cararvan park office. We stayed a Lakeside Tourist Park and again were greeted by friendly folk. As Larry coaxed Judy back into her nesting spot for the next 2 nights, we couldn't help but be taken aback by the amazing lake our site backed onto. The water looked like a piece of glass, with limestone beach as hard as concrete...we knew this place would be special.
Whilst in Robe, we saw so much that it had to offer including a very quaint village (much like Sorrento), a beautiful coast line, the Obelisk (a red & white beacon on the point of the coast- which can be seen up to 20km away on a clear day) and a beautiful fishing wharf.
Most all, Robe gave us an opportunity to take Larry for a spin on the sandy beach. (Long Beach) Tara was dead keen to feel the adrenallin of driving on the sandy beach, but Tristan on the other hand was a little more apprehensive.
As we pulled up the nerves grew stronger (for Tristan!) What if the car gets bogged? What if the tide comes in? Then we watched a young guy and his girlfriend drive past us, shrug there shoulders and just go for it. That was it... Larry went into low range, his hubs were locked and off we went down the steep soft incline and then through the gears most of the way down Long Beach. The best thing we have done so far-it was good to feel alive!
An absolute highlight....Thanks Robe!
We are off to Clare tomorrow for a one night stay (one of our fav places from our last SA Trip)- it is a long drive so it is early to rise for us!
