Named 1770 as it was the year Captain Cook first arrived in Australia!!
Thursday 26th November 2009
We arrived in The Town of 1770/ Agnes Water at around 6pm and we were promptly picked up by our hostel Southern Cross. We got checked into our hostel and then sat on the balcony of our room chatting and had a cold beer before going to get dinner. Tonight we used the left over vegetables and had veg stir fry with satay sauce with noodles. After dinner we watched TV for a bit and used the internet before going to bed.

This morning we had a very eventful breakfast not what you need first thing in the morning I can tell you!!! We got up at 08.30am in time for the free breakfast at the hostel. We were just making our toast and I was searching in our food bag for the peanut butter when out of no where a mouse jumped out of the bag onto my arm, I then flicked it off and it ran over Suzie's toast across the work surface and under the fridge I nearly died!!!!
After Breakfast we caught the free 10am shuttle bus into town for our 3 hour surf lesson. It's a lot harder than it looks but I was very impressed I managed to stand up three times there could be a pro in the making yet with a bit more practice ha ha. Suzie didn't manage to stand up but she did manage to surf on her knees and her hip so with a bit more practice who knows……….. The only problem with the lesson was there was about 30 people in the lesson (These are the cheapest lessons in Australia so I don't really know what we expected) so it was really busy and you kept banging into each other and there was only three instructors so you'd just be getting the hang of it and they'd move on to somebody else. So I think if we had another lesson we'd have a private one, it was still great fun though and we'd definitely do it again!!!
After the lesson we grabbed a quick bite to eat at the bakery before getting the 2pm shuttle bus back to the hostel to have a very quick shower in time to be ready for our Scooteroo tour this afternoon. Scooteroo is a 3 hour tour around 1770 and Agnes water to see kangaroos and to watch the sunset over the beach on motorbikes/scooters. Everybody had there own motorbikes and we all drove in big long line we looked like Hells Angels minus the leathers. Before we set out I was a little bit nervous as I've never driven a motorbike before but we were told if we could ride a bicycle we could drive one of these. I chose the pink bike and then we had to guard it with our lives because of course all the girls wanted the pink bike and I nearly lost it once when I took my eye of it for a moment. Suzie chose the racing red bike.
We set of and spent the first two hours driving around 1770 and Agnes water. We stopped a few times to see some kangaroos and so we could all have our pictures taken on our bikes. These bikes can pick up some speed we got to 80km an hour at one point and that seemed so fast when your on a scooter a little bit scary. We got to the beach in time for sunset and sat and watched the sunset with potatoe wedges and a drink.
After sunset it was time to get the bikes back to the shop before it got really dark. The journey back was uneventful until we were 5 minutes away from the garage when I saw Suzie's life flash before my eyes. All of sudden Suzie lost control and went hurterling towards a car on the other side of the road luckily it served out the way and Suzie managed to regain control of the bike, she was a little shaken to say the least!!! So after that we took it steadily back to the garage dropped the bikes before being dropped back at the hostel.
This evening we had a quite one as we were both so tired from our busy day. Once we got back to the hostel we both read our books for a bit and had a bit of snooze before using the internet, watching TV and then we got an early night.

This morning we had to check out by 09.30am, so once we had checked out we got the shuttle bus into and went to an internet cafe to update the blog. As usual this took alot longer than we had anticipated but we expect nothing else these days. After we had finished the blog we got the bus back and spent the rest of the afternoon around the pool topping up the tans and reading. It was then time to get showered and fed before getting the night bus at 9pm.
The driver from 1770 to Rockhampton who we nicknamed Safety Steve as he did everything by the book and made us all sit in our designated seats (as if we moved we wouldn't be covered by our insurance obviously!!!) even though there was only 17 on the bus so we all could have had 2 seats each (There a rare breed these Greyhound drivers). Luckily for us at about midnight Safety Steve swapped with Nice Norman who let us all have 2 seats each so we actually got some sleep which was good. We arrived in Airlie Beach at 7am.
