Jackman Travels
We arrive to glorious weather after a glorious flight down the coast of Chile. Chile is an spectacular country in terms of it geography and geology - we'd recommend to anyone getting the flight we did (La Paz to Santiago via Arica) to experience its wonderful extremes. You travel over the Andes, watch as they dissipate towards the shore. You fly over the Atacama desert (STUNNING) and spot oases in the troughs of river basins - it really is amazing where man can live and chooses to live.
The area we stayed in feels like Williamsburg-ish (Brooklyn, New York), trendy, arty bars and cool graffiti and the hostel we stayed in was right in the heart of it.
We went out for a beer to enjoy the weather and were unfortunately joined by the drunkest man in the world, who called himself Michaelangelo. He was an alcoholic who was friendly enough but wanted some of our beer. He'd asked others but wouldn't leave us alone. First tactic was to give him a little. We'll never know if this would have made him go away as he promptly dropped it on himself and the floor. Second tactic was to ask him to leave but this just made him unbutton his shirt to reveal his nipple, sorry heart. Third tactic, and the successful one, was for Suzie to down the rest of the beer and leave the bar, a little drunk herself. Throughout, though, he informed us that he could tell that we were lovely, LOBURLY people. Tee hee.
As we had deprived ourselves of red wine and meat for a matter of weeks, we went out for a Parilla and ate masses and masses and masses of MEAT - whole chicken breast (x2), pork chop (x2), morcilla (x2), chorizo (only x1) and steak (x2), jacket potato (x2). You'll be pleased to know that this looked after our budget as it cost us 9 quid - lovely.
We took a walking tour the next day and Santiago is a beautiful city to visit - really under-rated. There are good churches (our last colonial one...), museums, art galleries and great parks, including one on a peak from which you are able to admire the whole city spread below you up to the vertiginous, snow capped peaks that surround it. Wow.
We could have spent another few days here but it's on to NZ after a 13 hour flight - joy.
