Rock and Roll!
So the deep south music tour continues and we have visited Memphis the home of Rock and Roll.
Memphis has two m's, obviously one stands for music, the other represents the many medical schools around Memphis.
While it's tempting to sit here and write about medicine, I'll stick to the music!
Day one we visited Gracelands (pictured) the home of Elvis Presley. It was very fascinating to see how the king of rock and roll spent all his money.
Cars, horses, private jets the place had everything. It was great to get an insight of his life and despite his wealth and status, they portray him as a decent kind hearted man.
During the evening we went out in Beale street which is the main nightlife stretch. Vehicles usually don't go down the street however on Wednesday's they allow motorcycles to ride down and park there.
It was a great atmosphere and there were hundreds of bikers showing off their prize assets. They have relaxed laws on drinking in the street and they sold 'big ass' beers which are 32oz (2pint) beers, of which we had to indulge in one or two.
On the second day we visited the stax museum which is a dedication to soul music. We also visited Sun Studio which is the recording studio where Elvis Presley's musical talent was discovered.
We toured by the Mississippi river where we could see Arkansas.
The bus stopped at the motel where Martin Luther King was fatally shot which was a chilling sight to see.
We visited The Peabody hotel which is famous for the duck fountain in the bar area. At 11am the ducks are marched from their rooftop home, down the elevator and onto a red carpet which leads to the fountain. We witnessed the reverse order which occurs at 5pm.
After another party filled night on Beale St, it was time to move on to the next destination in the form of Greenwood. En route we visited the Delta Blues and BB King Museum.
We also stopped for lunch at "Ground 0" which is a Blues club owned by Morgan Freeman. Apparently he occasionally calls in, although we werent so fortunate to catch him. The food was great and the most unique thing about it was the fact the whole place was covered in Graffiti. I couldn't resist picking up a permanent marker!
Finally a quiet night in as Greenwood doesnt quite offer the same nightlife as Nashville & Memphis. A much needed rest.
