And I'm off. Hamburg to Rügen
This year I seem to have disorganisation in my personal life down to a fine art. For example:
1) only figured out my 'what to pack' list the day before my Mom arrived and we went off exploring Scotland
2) Yesterday morning I booked my first 2 night's accommodation in Hamburg. Yesterday afternoon I started looking at airport parking - rookie error, horrendous costs. Last night I checked in online and booked train tickets to get me to the airport. Yay for iPhone passbook! No more printing though I suspect that Sleasy jet will require me to find an Internet cafe for the flight home. Also loaded more music onto iPhone. Considered changing to the one I inherited from Ms. Moon. I switched it on to discover it was New Year's Day. This idea was aborted. One thing I have to always know is the time/date while I'm away so I hopefully don't miss the flight home this time!
3) Finished packing this morning (read: deciding what was / was not making it in and running around looking for a tablet charger [failed] ) including getting the cyclometer cabling off my bike - which was with the poor designated scissors as I'd left both my leatherman AND my snips in the locker a work. Typical.
4) Detour enroute to station to drop off gunk at dump, buy station parking, a brisk walk to the Post Office before running over the bridge with my bags, printing off my train tickets (it was mercifully late so no panicking at the machine).
Now sitting in Frankfurt airport. This is destined to be a trip of weird experiences I can tell already.
Firstly I saw not one but 4 other planes in the sky enroute to Frankfurt. Pretty cool. One was a real fly by. Thanks BAA. Seeing how much emissions they leave behind them is quite disgusting and makes me not want to fly so much - if only it could be helped for flights over to the Americas and Australasia. Uploading a pic of the sky, couldn't get a plane in, moving too quick. The darker streaks at the top of the cloud line are emissions, still there after a few minutes and they create a nice smog. Europe is a busy airspace.
Secondly, I have been body checked TWICE now at the xray/security sections. Seriously, what is going on? All I have on is jeans and a cycling shirt! My second frisking was done by a transvestite. I kid you not.
Gave into buying a book here. "The hundred year old man who climbed out the window and disappeared" by Jonas Jonasson. Patrick, you can stop nagging now. Gonna post home when I'm done space dependant. Weight on bike currently 9.6kg - so much for packing super light...
Arrived Hamburg 20:00 and checked into hostel an hour later. Thankfully no further excitement for the day! Hostel clean and efficient. Nothing more needed.
