Steve and Lorna gallavanting around the world
We arrived in the capital of Cambodia by luxury bus which felt like an aeroplane - we even got free food! Very different from our other experiences to date.
With our new found friend - Kate, we all stayed at the friendly Sunday Guest House. This city is a bustling one full of mopeds, smiley faces, run down buildings and very dusty streets.
On our very first night we ventured to a pizza joint " Happy Herb Pizza's"
What we hadn't realised was that the Happy herb in fact was marijuana!! And generous sprinkles they were! Within 20min Steve was in hysterics, Kate was feeling like led and well I was in denial!!! " They couldn't possibly put that much on the pizzas!!!" After a kamikaze rickshaw ride back to our guest house we had to literally climb on all 4's up the stairs to our rooms all in fits of giggles!!!
We found out that Phnom Phen is famous for their HAPPY Herb Pizza's!
Never Again!!!!
We also had a historical and cultural insight into the past of Cambodia and visited the following infamous places:
• Tuol Sleng S-21 Genocide Museum. This once was a school converted to a torture site. 12 Thousand victims - adults and children where sent here during the Khmer Rouge days in the 70's. The very graphic and haunting place with large visuals of the helpless victims. After being tortured they were taken up the road to the Killing Fields where they were beaten to death with blunt instruments as they didn't want to waste bullets. They were then thrown into mass graves.
• The Killing Fields are disturbing, mass grave after mass grave. The site is just as it was when it was found. Walking through the fields you see bits of cloth and bones sticking out of the ground. These poor people never had a proper burial. It really is a very depressing and moving place.
Back to Happy...
We kept ourselves busy with various activities, a day swimming at the 5* Juliana Hotel - if only we could of afforded to stay there!!! Visited the many funky bars - though the streets were very quiet for being "peak" season it seemed.
We even experienced our own private cinema at the back of a video store!!!
The Russian market was overwhelming with so much to look at .. you could buy anything there!
We ended up staying longer then expected in Phnom Phen. We waited for the Vietnamese embassy to reopen after the Chinese New Year public holidays.. oh and the Vietnamese one.
Eventually with visa's in hand we said our goodbyes to lovely Kate and ventured to the mighty Mekong Delta - Vietnam!!!
