Steve and Lorna gallavanting around the world
We have had a magical time through Oz, travelling through the Northern territory, Queensland and New South Wales.
Darwin was a strange place to begin - The first two people we saw in this town were identical twins - dressed identically, same hair-do and at the age of 55years!!! This is a strange place!
We then moved further south into the Red center for our tour which was awesome and with a typical (stereotypical to you and me) tour guide named Lumpy. The 3-day trip was worth every penny. Blessed with wonderful weather and blue blue skies the colour of the red earth and rock stood out more fiercely. Uluru (ayers rock) was cool, amazing aboriginal tales told and beautiful sunrise and sunsets seen. We trekked around Kings canyon and The Olga's. So pretty and strangely reminded us a lot of our time in Namibia at Spitskoppie. This was only the start of the similarities of Oz and Africa!!! Okay Oz is lacking in any fab wildlife like the big five...
With a few days in Alice Springs we eventually caught the correct timed flight to Cairns. Lush and green, we explored further to the Tablelands, Daintree rainforest, Cape Tribulation. Amazed by the vastness of this country and sad to see all the devastation that cyclone Larry left behind. Trees uprooted everywhere and mangled corrugated iron rapped around poles and tree trunks. Even the famous Huge 500 year old Red Cedar didn't make it. After a hike to get to it we were met with the whole tree uprooted... very sad.
Then our road trip began. Steve and I hired a Wicked camper van for two weeks to drive down to Brisbane. We were lucky enough to get the coolest of the fleet. The vans body work spray painted with Batman all over it. Hence known as the Batmobile. A home to us and a good little home it was. The drive down the east coast was fabulous and all made better with having our own freedom to go where we please.
We did do a couple of tours. A must to anyone heading to this part of the world.
**We sailed the beautiful Whitsunday islands on an 82ft maxi yacht for 3 days. So cool and we even got to winch up the sails and stuff. Such clear waters and stunning snorkeling. Whithaven beach is just magical!!!!!
**The other adventure trip was 4x4ing on Fraser Island. Wicked!!!!!! 10 of us, all strangers were given a 4x4 to navigate and take to the largest sand island in the world.
From rainforest, to dunes, to the most amazing lakes I have ever seen. Lake McKenzie is just one of the most stunning beaches ever. Crystal clear waters in all the blues imaginable, the softest squeakiest sand, bordered by green trees. And all fresh water!!!! The pea soup colour Lake Wabby was cool too, though at one point I did think I had broken my leg from running down the sand dune into the water.... All is fine.
On our road trip we passed some great little towns and sites, even visited the mad lunatic Steve Irwin's Australian zoo. Not being one for zoo's I was rather impressed by this one. I even cuddled a koala!!! Doppy little things but just the cutiest!
We then came to the end of our road trip adventure and goodbye to Batmobile...
And joined up with our fab friend Kate in Surfers Paradise. Where her lovely parents welcomed us and made us feel so at home. (We are at that point in our trip where the feeling of home is very much required.... Living out of a backpack for 7 months now!!!!!)
Next we made it to the Best best place we have found so far Byron Bay. Absolutely LOVE IT! Thanks to those of you who highly recommended it to me. You were so right! A hippy, arty coulourful little town. Just amazing!
This is were we had our first surfing lesson. Blessed even with a dolphin swimming around us added to the fab experience. And yup we stood up!!! Although, Steve now has a very painful rib. Doh!
We also made a day trip to the cool Sunday markets and a quick stop to Nimbin. A rather strange little village set in a forest. Hippy overload and narcotics in abundance.... Apparently where you can legally buy marijuana and they even have an embassy dedicated to the stuff...
Next we are onto the Hunter Valley wine region and after that Sydney!!!
