Stephen's Travels
I arrived in Cairns to be greated by Buckloads of rain. Apparently I have arrived in the middle of the wet season. Tropical storms and torrential rain are not uncommon....b*****!
Thankfully the rain normally fell in the evening which enabled me to have fun during the daytime. I arrived a my hostel; Gilliagans (a four hundred bed well equipped hostel complete with it's own bar). I soon learnt that the partying in this giant resort never stops. Fun for a few nights.
The Hightlight of my Stay was a boat trip to the great barrier reef. This took 1 and a half hours, but it was more than worth the wait. The water was crystal clear and the colours and textures of the coral is incredible. Snorkelled for a few hours, before trying my first suba dive. Very strange experience being able to breath under the water, but very rewarding once you have got acustomed to diving.
I also took part in a tour named on the wallaby to the Atherton Table lands east of Cairns. This was brilliant fun. It was a small group of people, we were driven around by mini bus to Waterfall and rainforest. Saw the cathedral fig tree a 800 year old mass of vines. One of the waterfalls; Millaa, Millaa was used on the Timoty adverts. I swam under the icey waters (bit like a strong powershower) before heading to lake Echam and being given a guided rainforest walk.
Also went mountain biking, kayaking inseach of the illusive tree kangeroo. Aberiginee face painting. Platipus spotting and I even learnt how to play the digeree Doo. The technique is to blow a rasberry down the tub (my efforts sounded a bit like a kangeroo farting).
I hop on to the Oz experience bus next to head south.
