I arrived in Dar es Salaam airport at around 7am after quite a nice BA flight. For anyone who's planning on visiting it costs $100 for Irish (& American) people to enter tanzania and only $50 for all other people (but don't worry I think I make it back in Zambia).
Dar is a strange City, really busy, not well maintained, with really mental traffic (no road markings anywhere, no traffic lights, no signs, so as you can imagine the hundreds of crossroads are interesting to watch).
While in Dar I went to the national museum (which was interesting, mainly because it was surrounded by a fence of corrugated iron). I also visited Kariakoo market which was really busy, colourful, lots of smells (good and bad). It has a bit of a reputation for not being very safe - and at one point I felt like perhaps I was about to be robbed (I turned around and walked away and I wasn't robbed; so all good).
Overall Dar actually feels quite safe and the people nice, most people don't really bother with you. You do however have ward off lots of very friendly people trying to give you tours of the city for a "tip".
I went for a walk to the beach which was very picturesque, and took my first pictures, it's dificult to take pictures when you are travelling alone in Dar while you are trying desperately not to look like a tourist (as you can imagine I don't think I can do much to avoid looking like a tourist). Which was also a problem when I got lost in Dar as I didn't think it was a good idea to get my map out and stand looking lost at a corner so I walked for a while (quite a while) until I could find where I was and then walked a while longer until I found somewhere where I could nip in and look at my map.
Overall Dar was fine, not a lot to do, but it's a good hub for getting around Tanzania; next stop Zanzibar!
