Tuesday 11th April
We on our last overnight train in China and for our tour, it's very sad. We arrive early in the morning at the Chinese border; we all get off the train and start walking for 10 minutes to the border control. This is quite a weird border crossing in my opinion! We get to the Chinese side and get stamped out ok, and then we needed to walk to the next border! It took a little while, which seemed to take longer as we were all carrying our entire luggage! We all got through fine; we stopped and had some food seeing as it was lunch time and we were all dying!
Our last train was the local subway to our hotel which literally stopped us off outside. The hotel we are in is quite a fancy one for the tour, but very welcoming for the one night. We all got washed and dressed to head out for some food. We went to a popular restaurant and we both had Malaysian curry, I am looking forward to Malaysia more now!
Leon took us out for our orientation walk, it was warm! We walked down the main high street; all the shops had their neon lights out trying to attract more customers. We walked down to the harbour and could see Hong Kong Island; we saw our next hotel which wasn't very hard seeing as it was a high rising Marriott hotel! Leon told us how to get across and what else to see before he had to leave to sort out things before he left.
We decided to go to Victoria peak with the Swedish girls (a good job too as the weather turned sour for the next few days!). We jumped aboard the star ferry, which cost us 20p to get to the island. Hong Kong Island is where all the sky scrapers are at! We were surrounded by them all! Maria and Stu did the directing to get to the Sky Peak tram. We brought our tickets and waited to jump aboard and go up to the top. I'm glad I did seeing how steep the tram was actually travelling up! We reached the top and decided to stop for a quick snack seeing as we won't be eating until 9pm. We stopped at Bubba Gump, made famous in Run Forest Run. It was good, Stu and I got a mini platter of differently prepared shrimp and some amazing fruit shakes! We sat by the window watching Hong Kong turn from day to night. We only had a small meal, just enough to get us through the day! We continued walking up the hundreds of escalators to the observatory point. By now night had fallen and the city was all lit up brightly. It was very impressive, various buildings lights made different patterns/colours and all worked really well. It was getting a bit nippy so we headed back down to get ready for dinner. We decided to get the subway as it would be quicker and take us outside our door. We got washed and dressed ready to go for dinner.
We all sat down and had our last meal, it was kind of sad, but we had already planned the next day with Maria and Nina so it was ok! We went back to the hotel and grabbed a few beers having one last night together before leaving. We said our goodbyes, in case we didn't see each other in the next few days. We didn't go to bed till 2am!
Wednesday 12th April
We had a lot to do before our day's activities of…OCEAN'S PARK! We pack our bags and checked out and had to move to our next hotel on Hong Kong Island. It wasn't too much of a walk; we jumped on the subway and got off on Hong Kong Island. We had to navigate ourselves across the streets, which was a mission in itself! There were so many overhead staircases and was just manic. We have come to realise that 99% of the island is connected by the shopping malls and various business buildings, so if you wanted you can walk constantly inside! We found our hotel at last, finding the entrance was tricky enough, inside a shopping mall…! We checked in and our room was ready so we went and dropped the bags off, we had a lovely view of the swimming pool and the hills behind us. We realised that we could listen to the tv while have a shower/bath which I found awesome, better if there was an actual TV though!
We then walked to the bus station to go the theme park Ocean's park! We had planned to spend the day with Nina and Maria; they planned to join us later as they didn't sleep to well last night. The park had its own shuttle bus which was easy for us, we arrived and walked in. It was a week day so was pretty quiet; the longest queue was for the gondola to go over the mountain to the rides! There was some awesome rides, and a lot of wet rides too which we needed badly today!
We meet up with Maria and Nina and went on the rides and had a really good time, we left a bit earlier as we had done all the rides, and caught the bus back home. We had a dip in the pool, which was lovely! It was so warm today and we needed to cool down!
We had agreed to meet Maria and Nina later for dinner; we had planned to go to the famous, cheapest Michelin star restaurant. I later found out it closes at 9pm, and takes 2 hours to get in! It was 8:30 pm when we met the girls and the Germans, Alex and Mathias. So we decided to go to the main land and find something, enroute we bumped into the Danish girls, Emma and Penile! They were off to the Michelin restaurant until we told them the bad news and asked if they wanted to join us. We ended up finding a pizza restaurant and order the two biggest pizzas in the world! Like huge!!! We had two slices each; even that was too much food! We had a lovely evening, said our goodbyes once more and then retired back to our hotel room.
Thursday 13th April
We used today to go shopping, we went down the main high street and stopped in various camera shops which we were playing with the idea of getting another one, but we decided not to in the end. We found an outlet store on one of the other islands and took a tube there. It took a while to get there! It was great; however some stores were still out of our budget! We went and brought plenty of items from Quiksilver, we brought 6 items costing us £70 which is a huge saving from back at home! After we had been shopped out we went back home and took advantage of the pool again!
We attempted to go to the Michelin star restaurant again today, but the queue was an hour long. The restaurant is literally a tiny café which has had a lot of advertisement from guidebooks, so it is no longer a secret! We ended up moving elsewhere as we couldn't be bothered to wait!
We went back home and actually used the gym! It was good as it warn me out so I could sleep better for our early wake up call to catch our flight!
I am quite sad to leave China; it has been a great few weeks here. The food will be missed greatly!
Overall view on Hong Kong:
Hong Kong is a giant shopping mall, extended across several islands. I have enjoyed Hong Kong, mainly as it is now as we are slowing down the pace that the last two tours had. There isn't a heck of a lot to do in Hong Kong other than shop, and if you're on a budget, it makes it hard!
