We left Baldwinsville to go to Newark NY. Newark NY is MUCH nicer than Newark NJ, We had a couple of low bridges to go under (16 ½') and our boat needs 15' 3". The whisker pole that Tom help me install, definitely took some of the stress out of going under those bridges. The western half of the canal has more stretches of the manmade sections of the canal. They are very easy to spot because there are long sections of the canal that are straight.
Coming through the canal we came across a Canal Corp barge, removing a tree that had fallen into the canal. It was interesting to watch them lift the tree out with a crane, and cut it up.
While we were in Newark we once again stocked up the boat. First we took the bikes to Save-A-Lot, and got what we could fit in the back pack. Then we had our first Insta-Cart delivery. There was a Wegman's close by, but Insta-Cart sent me a coupon for $40 off a $80 order. It worked out great, I used the app to pick out what we wanted (mostly heavy stuff water, soda, laundry detergent etc.) and 90 minutes later it was delivered to the boat. I am sure we will use this again.
While were there we also went to the library where they has a Clock Museum. I would not say it was a waste of time, but I am glad it was free! The down side of the museum was they required us to wear mask. This is the first time in several weeks that we were required to where them. Newark also has a farmers market every Thursday from 4pm to 7pm. We also took advantage of that, getting some nice fruit and vegetables.
Thursday night we spent some time will a mother and daughter their dog Matilda, whose spouses were driving to Maryland in a rental car to pick up there truck that they left there. They purchased the sailboat that they were on there, and were making their way to Saginaw Michigan. They are stuck in Newark, because between Lock 29 and Lock 30 the canal wall gave way, and that section of the canal only has 5 to 6 feet of water in it. The lock tenders will not let any boat that draws more than 5 feet of water to travel that section. Some of the sailboats have been stuck here for a month, and it may be another month before it is fixed.
Tomorrow we will go through that, and also the lowest bridge on the canal. More on that in our next post.
