Hand written filling instructions at Lock 17. We road our bikes back to the lock to see what we went thru the day before. The lock master was super nice. He explained everything as he did it. Lock 17 broke down early in the season. The gate and mechanism to open it is 103 years old. Three of the teeth on a 10 round gear wheel broke. They have removed the gear, and sent it to Utica to be repaired. Mean while they are using a crane to lift and lower the gate. Repairs are taking longer then they expected, they are having trouble doing the NDT (Non Destructive Testing) on the rest of the gear.
