Driving along coastline is an experience that most people have dreamed about. I was lucky enough to do this during this Christmas. With two friends and my wife, we set off early in the morning.
Our first destination was Port Campbell. It is a lively and colorful seaside village and is home to restaurants and cafes with views of the beach. Sheltered by cliffs and Norfolk pines, Port Campbell has the atmosphere of a heaven on the edge of wild nature.
Twelve Apostles, the most famous tourist attraction along Great Ocean Road, is just 10 minutes drive away from Port Campbell. The scenery is out of your imagination - several giant rock stacks rising majestically from the ocean.
Next to Twelve Apostles is Gibson Step which refers to the staircase leading down to the stretch of beach. We went down the staircase and walked on the beach which provided us a closer look at two of the Twelve Apostles. Ocean waves crashed on the rocks unrelentingly, generating lots of mist. It seemed that we were standing in front of two giant guards who kept the door to heaven.
Then we drove to another seaside village - Apollo Bay. It boasts a beautiful beach surrounded by rolling hills. Since there were few waves on the beach, many people were swimming in the sea. This place appeals to me and I want to spend a night there during my next trip to Great Ocean Road.
Then we headed to Lorne where we plan to fill up the car. However, the trip to Lorne was not that smoothly. We encountered a traffic jam and
there were hundreds of cars in the queue. We were desperate, as the
car moved only 50 meters after 30 minutes. We were anxious to know
what was wrong with this. At this moment, an old lady in a car moving to us from the opposite lane yelling at us: Go back, the road is blocked! Following her instruction, we turned back. Being afraid that the car might run out of petrol any time soon, we stopped by a house by the side of the road to ask for some help. Instead of getting petrol there, we got something more important. The owner of that house just came back from Lorne and he told us the road was not completely blocked and the delay of traffic was caused by a landslide on the road side and the traffic was controlled by a traffic light at that time. We turned back and joined the queue again. This time, the queue moved much faster than before, since two policemen were assigned to control the traffic.
Although we were all very tired when getting back, we enjoyed the excitement we had during the trip.
