Hi all!!!
Well just a few days into our adventure and so far so good.......though, typically for us it has not been without drama!!! All started well in our beautiful JW Marriott hotel in Mexico City where Joe was most impressed with the speed of the lifts...those who know Joe will know just how easily pleased he is! Mexico City was not quite what we were expecting in that it seemed to lack a bit of character, though this suited us fine as we were both completely useless during our stay due to suffering jet lag, so we just chilled by the pool at the hotel and enjoyed the beautiful views of the city from there. Yesterday we picked up our car in Mexico City and, after about an hour of paperwork and waiting around, began the 6 hour drive south-east to Oaxaca. Joe did all the driving while I spent at least the first 4 hours trying to settle my stomach and dry my clammy hands (definitely turning into my mum!). Once we eased into it the driving was fine, roads relatively good, views through the mountains beautiful, and it was only when passing through towns or cities that things got a bit hairy. Anywho, we made it here to Oaxaca in one piece, but very nearly ended up two hours further south as our in-car navigation system, aptly named 'Hertz NeverLost' tried to take us down to the coast, WELL past Oaxaca where we had asked it to take us. More nerves and some serious stress levels later we made it to our little hotel here and headed swiftly out for beers and some traditional Oaxaca fare...including fried grasshoppers. Interesting, to say the least. Lovely evening spent chilling with beers and watching Easter festivities across the beautiful square, whilst Mexican couples salsa danced to traditional tunes - really good fun! We are now getting prepared for our next drive - 8 hours - to San Cristobal de las Casas and booking accomodation for Tulum (on the coast, south of Cancun) after that, while battling with Halifax as they have locked Joe out of his account despite him telling them that he was travelling to Mexico. Right, well I'll leave it there as we need to hit the road, but will update again as soon as poss.
Hasta Luego Gringo's!!!
