The third leg of our trip has finally begun :-).
On the 16th March we left Australia and flew onto Singapore. We were all pretty excited to be starting this part of our tour as we had heard such great things about all the places and countries we were about to visit from just about everybody that we've met along the way, even our flight was more exciting than anticipated. We arrived at Cairns airport only to be told that our original flight to Singapore (which was supposed to be flying via Darwin) had been cancelled due to a cyclone just south of Darwin. As a result, planes were unable to land in the area and we therefore not allowed to fly.
Due to our previous problems in Australia on Fraser Island and our Whitsunday's boat trip, we were beginning to feel like we were jinxed! However, as it turns out, we got upgraded onto a better flight, which flew earlier in the day to Singapore! The only catch was that we had to fly via Sydney (3000km in the wrong direction) as opposed to Darwin.
Little did we know that aboard that flight, along with us, three simple English backpackers, was Professor Green and his band. Apparently he isn't famous enough yet to fly his whole team (32 of them) first class so we had the pleasure of sitting, chatting and drinking with them for the entire eight hour flight. Great flight, time flew by and we were told loads of stories about Professor Green and Jessie J (who they'd been supporting during her tour in Australia).
As I've already mentioned, our first stop in South East Asia was Singapore. We spent three nights there where we were lucky enough to be shown around by my former boss.
We were truely spoilt whilst we were there. Mark took us to the best local restaurants, serving great Singaporean food (best chicken and rice I've ever eaten) as well as driving us round to all the must see sights (see pics for references :-)), including a night safari! This is actually a really simple but clever idea as most zoo animals seem to spend their days sleeping in the shade or out of sight. By opening this zoo in the evenings, we got to see all the animals being far more active than you would normally as they were all up and about and roaming around.
We were also lucky enough to go to one of Singapore's most exclusive bars on Saturday night where we mingled with the rich and famous and consumed large quantities of Grey Goose vodka! Great evening, thanks Mark :D!
After Singapore we moved onto Malaysia (which is where we still are today). Our first stop was Kuala Lumpur; a really nice city with modern areas for shopping, dining and living whilst maintaining its older Asian influences with beautiful temples and historic caves. We were only in KL for 2 nights but got to experience both areas whilst we were there.
Since leaving Kuala Lumpur a week ago we have spent our time island hopping. Malaysia has some of the most beautiful islands and beaches in the world (I know I've been saying that the whole way along but the fact still remains true for here and I'm always amazed by what I see). We have visited islands on both the west and east coasts of the country including: Penang, the Perhentian Islands and Langkawi. I have pictures to show you all but currently I seem unable to upload them so they'll appear on here soon hopefully :-).
All three of these islands have blessed us with amazing weather (I was actually amazed to see the rain at the Malaysian Grand Prix this weekend as I spent the day running in and out of the sea to try and keep cool) which has helped up top up our tans, something that was in need of doing after disappointing weather in the northern half of Australia.
As well as sunbathing, these islands have provided us with excellent opportunities to experience Malaysian culture with the food, markets and toilets being new for us all (Malaysian toilets are apparently holes in the floor with a hose as your flush hahaha).
We are moving on in the morning to Thailand, Krabi being our first stop, but I can say safely say that if the rest of South East Asia is as beautiful, interesting and exciting as Singapore and Malaysia have proven to be then we are going to have an amazing 5 weeks!
Sorry for rambling on again, for all of you who read past the flight, congratualtions, I hope I haven't bored you haha.
Take care all and enjoy the British weather, my father has reliably informed me that you are all enjoying record breaking temperatures for March at the moment! I hope it continues :-)...and remember the water ban, short showers people, global warming is rearing its ugly head again haha!
Love as always xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
