The original reason for us going to San Gil was to do the grade 5 white water rafting, but due to the ridiculous amount of rain which had also delayed our bus, the river was way too flooded and too dangerous to go rafting on, even two days after we arrived, so we didn't get to do that, but we also didn't die doing it so that's a plus! The weather was also very pleasantly surprising! Given that San Gil is going up to about 1500m again I expected to have to start donning jumpers and suchlike, but in fact it was still really hot, just not at all humid, which was great! So I wiled away quite a lot of time soaking up what I could of the last of my sun before I went to Bogota!
Me and Ambar did manage to fit some activities in. We decided to give paragliding a go, not over the canyon, as that was insanely expensive, but just the short 12-15 minute flight, which in our case turned out to be 25 minutes each anyway which was cool! We went up one at a time in tandem with a guide, who flew us around, up hign into the air and swooping down so that your toes were almost grazing the trees, it was just like flying, exactly how I would imagine a bird feels! Awesome! The sudden drops and turns that made your stomach lurch were pretty cool too, and you could see for miles, right to the canyon. Definately something I'd like to do again!
We frequented an eating establishment Gringo Mike's BOTH nights I was there, which served giant burgers that for some reason noone seemed to be able to finish, and I of all people ended up finishing off the leftovers for them! Oh how times have changed! It also had a pretty damn good brownie, definately high up on the brownie scale, but still no where near as good as the Babaganoush brownie! (You're wrong Ambar!)
White water rafting did occur, with a group from our hostel, but in the small river, which was a higher grade because of all the rain, but not the near death experience of the big river that we were hoping for! It was still a good laugh though with a few fun rapids, and one of the girls eve fell in, which was entertaining!
I left without Ambar for Bogota, and arrived at stupid o'clock in the morning, got a taxi to a hostel which was full, and then aimlessly wandered around the streets looking for another, as they have recently renamed all the roads, so the lonely planet map has all the wrong addresses! I ended up in a hostel where a guy I knew was staying anyway so all turned out well!
Bogota wasn't as cold or rainy as I had been told it was, in fact it didn't rain at all, it was pretty sunny! I didn't actually do too much there though, and was only staying a night and leaving to the airport the next night, but we decided to celebrate my last night, and all went out to a club for a salsa night, we had a taxi race between our three taxis to the club, I danced a lot of salsa with the hostel receptionist, and at one point I went to the bar to buy myself a beer, and ended up going back to my friends 20 minutes later, slightly confused, and having been bought a double rum and coke and two tequila shots by various Colombians at the bar! So a good last night in South America.
There was an incredible amount of traffic on the roads when I needed to get to the airport, and it took the taxi 25 minutes just the leave the road the hostel was on! But luckily I'd left 3 hours before my flight, so still managed to get there during check in! And so I left South America, to meet my sister and for my last stop before home, Spain! (May as well while I'm on my way through!)
So that's good bye to South America for now! Amazing continent, I have loved my time here, the amazing beautiful things I've seen, the wonderful crazy experiences I've had, and of course the fantastic people I've met and friends I have made! It has definately been one of the best, unforgettable times of my life, and I can't wait to come back!
