I had a really moving day today, more so than i expected. I left Bangkok on the local bus service and headed up country towards Burma to a place called Kanchanaburi. Weather has cooled slightly, bit more cloudy.
2 hours on the bus and im in this little place that floats on the river, the Jolly Frog no less, a floating raft house in the reeds on the side of one of the most infamous rivers, the River Kwai!!
Sleeping on a raft boat sounds better than it is, every time a boat goes up the river you get this queasy feeling. Never mind, its the experience eh!
Quick swim in the river before breakfast, rent of the trusty steed "Sir Walter" and i'm pedalling up the road to find the bridge.
Stopping off at a couple of museums first to get the background of the bridge. Obviously the films a romantic notion on the reality of building an impossible railway across the mountains of thailand and Burma but blimey i didnt realise quite the cost of human life to put this railway together!!
The bridge itself is faily usual, but its the history about how it came to be, visiting the huge cemetary of allied graves thats the moving bit. I didnt realise quite how many people died making the railway (200,000+). and how many times the allies had to blow it up after completion!!
Well worth the trip, got some good snaps. But will be happy back in the bustle of Bangkok tomorow.
Then to Chang Mai for the trekking part of my trip!
