So, having pretty much found the whole of Cambodia quite a tedious travel, i was not sure what too expect in Siem Reap. Would it be more of the same-same or something completely different, worthy of the World Heritage name it carries?
and, i am glad to say, i love Siem Reap, yeah the tuktuk drivers are a pain and the kids, well they are just everywhere with their $1 flutes and bracelets, but it has so much more charm than the rest of Cambodia. Even before you get near the temples.
Temples, temples, temples. MMM. Three day pass, 70+ temples to visit. 30+ degree heat. You know its just not going to happen......
So check my photos, there are still hundreds even though i only made about 10 of the temples. But i think i got the best.
- Sunrise at Angkor Wat, the greatest temple of them all.
- Early morning at Ta Prohm (from the film Tomb-Raider). I was the only person in the temple. Amazing....seeing as there are generally 2 million chinese tourists in crocodile fashion at EVERY temple.
- Smiley faces at Bayon. A temple dedicated to acid house. Each side of the temple has over 25 faces looking out, protecting the temple from marauders....!!
- And a moment of pure timing, i was at the university temple, where over 1000 buddhist monks used to study each day. I was inside a dark room where i spotted a huge bell down the corridor. I was the only person in the temple. AS i moved towards it the bell started to glow!! A beam of sunlight through the roof lit up the bell and the room. I got it on photo too, but i guess you had to be there, of course ill tell you i could hear the chattering of the monks in years gone bye......
Remember these were built whilst we were in the dark ages, awaiting conquering by William 1st and between the great Crusades. Amazing.
Hats off to the Cambodians, they do look after this place well considering how s*** the rest of the country is!!
So i have great memories of Cambodia that will last forever, along with the voices öne dollAR, 4 thousand, you buy my bracelet/flute/postcard/water" etcetc,
Smashing. Next stop. Thailand again. Koh Samet and some islands...
