What's going on...how come I seem to be getting all the boring day blogs to write where we've been driving all day, and Scott gets all the excitement! Today was again about getting from A to B - from Hanmer Springs to Fox Glacier - a 6-7 hour drive via the Lewis Pass to Greymouth on the west coast and then down the west coast past Franz Josef Glacier to the small alpine town of Fox, named after the Fox Glacier. Despite being in the van all day I was hoping for fine weather as the pass was meant to be v scenic passing through dense forest and the southern Alps. We left Hanmer Springs in blazing sunshine, having stocked up on some food supplies. However given that we are in New Zealand, and that means changeable weather, it was not long before the day became overcast and the wind picked up. In Greymouth we filled up on fuel and Scott phoned one of the glacier guiding companies from a public phone box to book a half day hike on the glacier for tomorrow. Lunch stop was in the drizzle in the a picnic spot on the coast line and we eventually reached Fox by5ish. The plan had been to do a 1 hour walk around Lake Matheson which on a clear day is meant to have magnificent views of My Cook mirrored in the lake. Given that the clouds were low and hugging the mountains on our arrival at the campsite, and the drizzle continued, we opted to sit in the campsite lounge and have an early dinner and sort out the campervan hire online for Australia instead.
