About 70km west of Ceduna is the small community of Penong. Penong consists of 1 shop, 1 roadhouse, 1 nice old stone pub, a primary school and about 100 windmills. Penong's thing seems to be windmills. The "welcome to Penong" sign has a picture of a windmill with some sort of statement linking Penong to Windmills. Driving towards Whyalla the first thing you see in the distance is the steelworks. The land is flat and scrubby so the large steelworks stands out. Driving away from Adelaide on Sunday morning, I came upon a landmark that was familiar. I remember this imposing giant statue of a Scotsman stuck on top of a Motel on Main North road. The journey from rapid bay to Adelaide is fairly short and unremarkable. What did get my attention were the large "closed" signs on the southern expressway on the approach to Adelaide. The tour goes on through western Victoria and SE South Australia. Portland was first on the list. I was again surprised at the size of the place. Comalco/Rio have contributed to this size no doubt by locating an aluminium smelter in Town. Taking the southern road (not the Princess highway) brings you to Nelson.
