Yesterday we were up and on the road by 8am. Finally I am allowed to drive again! After a hour of driving at 50kph I sped up, only to be pulled over. Fintan jumped out with the documentation to sort it out. The officer claimed we were speeding, Fintan asked to see the camera, and it showed us travelling at 67kph in what the officer said was a 50 zone. I couldn't believe it - after all that time driving at 50, I was sure I hadn't been speeding! The fine was a massive 100USD! Fintan went to pay it…
Just before we were pulled in he'd been filming, there was music on the stereo and lots of traffic… so I didn't know, maybe there was a sign I just didn't see… I checked the camera… Our footage showed we had passed a speed sign - but showing the end of the 50 zone!!! I wasn't speeding!! Fintan!! Don't pay him anything!! Only by the time I'd watched it, he was back at the car.
Come on, let's go… O, did you pay him… No - he wouldn't give me a receipt…Good, I wasn't speeding - we were outside the 50 zone! Check the camera…
Ha ha! We were both flush with victory! But I would say that the Mongol Rally teams probably just paid up there and then. It was only Fintan's determination to get a receipt and the years of being in Africa that he didn't pay up…
We drove on and into Shymkent, quite a bustling town. We got some cash, picked up some supplies and continued east. We arrived at Zaghbaly about 3pm and pulled up at the guesthouse ready to head to the campsite only to find the overlanders here too! We all went up together, had a few beers and dinners and the storytelling began!
But finally we are up in the mountains, it is glorious and sunny. We saw an eagle circling this morning - magnificent!
