Night location: Rome
Another transit day today, this time from Capri to Rome. After an Italian breakfast in a cafe overlooking the sea and a cliff hung road winding up to Anacapri, we began the journey which consisted of a funicular, a ferry, a taxi, a fast train, and another taxi! Our hotel is located in a small street that runs behind Piazza Navona which is a fantastic location.
When booking the hotel Amber was unable to book three of the same type of rooms and unfortunately this meant that one of us would get the economy double. Amber assumed that this just meant that the room would be slightly smaller. Alas, this was not the case! Gemma and Gareth drew the short straw and opened their room to find their bed was a mattress on the floor, which was positioned on a shelf-like platform up a series of steps. Not only this, but the towels were also 'economy' being only hand towels which would only cover the essentials! Gareth abandoned protocol and went to the front desk to request grande towels!
After checking in Amber and David caught a taxi across town while the others walked to Antica Enoteca, a favourite lunch spot on the Via della Croce. Following delicious food and a Venchi gelato stop, we headed out into the beautiful streets of Rome for some shopping. This is by far Amber's favourite city as every street that you walk down has an array of coloured buildings in a variety of architectural styles. There is also an abundance of water fountains, some that are intricately decorated, while others are just bronze spouts spilling out from a wall. Surprisingly the boys were the big spenders with both Gareth and David purchasing a variety of pants, shirts and jackets. Amber and Gemma returned to their favourite jewellery shop and purchased a pair of earrings each and Amber also purchased a beautiful linen tablecloth.
Dinner was a comedy of errors as even though our host checked our order twice, Gemma's entree and main arrived in the first course, Gareth's entree and main arrived in the second course, and David's meal was in reverse order. Amber had at least three attempts at ordering mocktails. The first attempt resulted in a random drink that arrived in an elephant mug with a sprig of rosemary and a red rose floating on the top. We looked aghast so our host tried again, this time with some success but forgetting Gareth's.
After dinner, Mum, Gemma and Gareth walked to the Trevi fountain and threw coins in so that they would all return. Mum made an expensive wish and is tight lipped as to what she wished for. She was determined to use more than a copper coin as it may not come true, so Dad was forced to pay up the exorbitant sum of 33 Euro cents, begrudgingly!
