25 - 28 March
The bus from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap was a very long one, nut I got the chance to watch some crazy Cambodian horror films. After 12 long, sweaty hours we reached our destination and got a tuk tuk to the hotel. Our hotel was fab it was a real treat after our cockroach infested room in Sihanoukville.
The hotel was a short walk away from the market and the centre of town. On our first night we just grabbed a bite to eat and went to bed.
The next day we took it easy and bought a few things including Adam's first pair of fisherman shorts, which he swore he would never end up buying.
In the evening we went to a few pubs and got an early night in preparation for visiting the temples the next day.
It was a 9am start and we hired a driver for 12 dollars a day to take us round the temples. I had been before, but I was so excited about going back and pretending I was an archeologist on a dig oblivious to the thousands of other tourists.
We started the day off at the Angkor Wat, half of it was closed to the public. I was worried about visiting that half because I would half to climb up a massive flight of stairs of my hands and feet and then decend again and you know if you have been keeping up with my blog that I am petrified of slopes and stairs like that.
We went to the Bayon temple after that, which was a temple with hundreds of faces everywhere. I must have taken dozens of pictures. We went to Ta Keo after that and Adam scaled the beast to the top and I waited sheepishly at the bottom for him.
My favourite temple was the last one of the day, Ta Prohm, the temple that was featured in Tomb Raider. I loved the fact that you felt like you were lost in the jungle, old trees pushing there way through the walls and floors of the temple. It was absolutely beautiful. We got back to the hotel in the early afternoon and Adam headed straight to bed, he had taken a real beating from the heat.
The next day we started our mammoth journey to Laos. There was no direct route from Siem Reap so we had to make our own disjointed way there.
We caught a bus to Kampong Cham and caught a taxi to Steug Treng near the border to stay over night.
The taxi was very interesting. There was five of us squeezed on the back seat of a small Toyota Corolla and four in the front. The driver shared his seat with another man and he had one cheek on his leg and the other near the gear stick. He was doing 100mph on 30mph dirt track roads, I felt like we were in a rally car. It was scary as hell, but very fun!
