Sarah J's Fully Sick Travel Page
Greetings everyone!
Since my last postcard from Prague, we went out as a group and had traditional Czech cuisine while we listened to some traditional music and dancers. It was a 4 course meal that started with salmon and caviar, then a soup, then duck, pork and ham with dumplings and sauerkraut. After having a bad sauerkraut experience before in germany, it was hard to like it, but it was sweeter than the german sauerkraut. Dessert was strawberry crepes....so we were all very satisfied to say the least.
Wednesday morning we headed for Vienna, and when we crossed the border our tour manager played "The hills are alive with the sound of music" which was very appropriate. We did a little city tour on the bus then got off and had some lunch. After lunch we had some free time so Jackie and Annelise and I went to explore the natural history museum. The building is awesome, you'll see when I get some pictures up, but it was honestly the best museum i've ever been to. My favourite part was the insect section.
We met the rest of the group again to check into our hotel. This is the point where I stopped feeling like a poor backpacker and felt like a rockstar. The hotel was a five star Marriott, and after spending alot of time in hostels, this was a real treat. We all got dressed up and then headed out to Schönbrunnen palace for a three course dinner, and we had traditional apple strudel for dessert. The palace was the summer residence of the royal family and has over 1500 rooms. After dinner, we went to a wing of the palace called the Orangery, where Mozart has played for the royals, and listened to a Mozart and Strauss concert. It was a really great night, I feel very cultured now.
The next morning (after sleeping in the most comfortable bed ever and stuffing ourselves with the largest array of breakfast items I have ever seen) we checked out St Stephen's cathedral which has very old catacombs. We did a guided tour through them, we actually got to see like thousands of bones and lots of skulls too. It was used as a public cemetary at one stage, especially when the black plague was around so we got to see the hole in the ground where they used to chuck people and there are still bones you can see. Unfortunately we wern't allowed to take photos, so you'll all just have to come to Vienna and see them yourselves.
After that we headed to the Kaiser apartments, basically just rooms where the king and queen used to live...thats one thing i've seen alot of here in Europe.
I also actually found out that there is three other LDS girls on my tour who are from Canada, so thats cool but i've mainly been hanging out with aussies...i think i'll get an aussie withdrawel after this tour.
Anywho i'll post more soon.
Tschüss.
Sarah.
