The time has arrived for JC to journey home to Ireland via Santiago and Bogota and the original two travellers were continuing on for the 6 week adventure that was to be Argentina. The plan was lots of meat, wine, meat, wine and more of both! Our first stop was a quick pit stop in Salta after a long overnight bus. We had arrived into the low season of Argentina and pretty much were the only people staying at the Loki hostel ranch, which suited us perfectly as we got a rare treat of having private dorm all to ourselves. After finding a treat in the supermarket of a hot deli we said farewell to Salta and purchased another Semi-cama ticket to the wine capital of Argentina which is Mendoza. We were two very excited Irish travellers as it was St Patrick's and we were in desperate need of a party and Mendoza didn't disappoint. Our hostel in Mendoza also told us the best news upon arrival - unlimited free red wine EVERY night. We arrived to the Irish bar with our hostel crew in tow and were greeted with a lot bigger party than thought. The street was taken over with face painting and drink tents. We soon learnt there was only one other Irish person at the party so we were really milking our celebrity national status that night. Many an Argentinian still has a picture of us in their phone from that night with customary shamrocks on our faces. The next few days of Mendoza passed in a hazy but amazing blur of cycling bikes around vineyard after vineyard, sampling every Malbec or Torrentes that was within 5 inches of us. Sarah also celebrated her birthday here as well and was surprised with amazing presents of tattoo, top class dinners, bunjee jumps and much more. The sparkling wine and Malbec helped being away from family and friends on this day and Dani was an absolute star and spoilt her rotten. After almost a week and at the requests of our livers we booked another semi cama bus to Córdoba and swore after that experience we would only go cama total(fully reclining bed with blanket) in future. We spent a long night on a bus with air conditioning leaking on us without a blanket but we finally arrived to Cordoba. These few days can be summarised by home cooking, steak, English TV channels, taking over couch and tv room, lunch boxes and ENGLISH CINEMA.
The next stop on our Argentinian expedition was the wonder that is Iguazu Falls. We rolled into town on a fully reclined bed and set off to the Brazilian side of the falls. We weren't sure what to expect as we had avoided looking at pictures and our first glimpse of the falls was absolutely breathtaking. You can't prepare yourself for that view that goes on forever into the distance. It would only be fair to see it from both sides so the next day we got up early and went to explore the Argentinian falls. After a little bit of stress getting go pro up and running we went off in search of the speed boat that would bring us UNDER the waterfalls.. YES you read that right we paid good money to speed under the worlds second largest waterfalls! And worth every penny it was.. Even if only for the faces we pulled in the go pro pictures! We saw the rest of the park and eventually dragged our wet selves back to town and almost ran to a restaurant 'La Dama Juana' that had come highly recommended... And it was without doubt the best steak we had in Argentina and washed down with an awesome bottle of Malbec. When in Rome...
Another cama total experience awaited us and this time it was headed in the direction of Buenos Aires. When we arrived we were hoping to restart our careers and secured a volunteering job in Milhouse hostels. Firstly before we started our shifts we were heading for our first BNO (big night out) and BA didn't disappoint, we sampled a lot of the cocktails in the hostel before finally arriving home at a respectable Argentinian hour of 7am. This was a sign of how our first two weeks working in the Milhouse were to go. We made a lot of friends, mastered our pint pouring skills, became experts at translating the Menu del Dia for the display board, grew very very fond of Fernet & Coke and Mate tea. It was such a nice treat to be able to stay in the one place for a few weeks and joy continuously have to move. BA & Milhouse hold a lot of special memories for us. We made a lot of friends there, laughed a lot, became talented at doing animal noises. La Bomba de Tiempo and Fuerza Bruta were two of the coolest tourist things we did whilst there and hopefully we stay up there as the best Irish bartenders they will ever have. It was crazy to think our central and South American dream was coming to an end. Our flight to Santiago was booked so in the knowledge we had no more cama totals ahead of us we packed our bags for the first time in almost a month and looked ahead to what New Zealand had to offer.
Without a doubt we had a blast in Argentina and this list is like our own word cloud of what sticks out the most: fernet, steak, Malbec, cama total, lomo, bife de chorizo, dulce de leche, empanadas, tattoos, quilmes, room 309, hablas ingles?, dorm rooms to ourselves, Mr Hugo, free lemonade, silver service on buses, Chinese salad bars, drum show, la boca, fuerza bruta, free drinks
