Moreton Island
40km off the coast of Brisbane lies Moreton Island. It is entirely made of sand and has wild dolphins come into its shores every night. After reading this description in my lonely planet (the bible) I decided we had to go. This sounds like a simple misdemeanor but it ended up being quite a challenge. We had to get the tent (the one we used in Byron Bay), a sleeping mattress (mainly because of the hard floor experiences of Byron Bay), a camping stove, gas for the stove, food to last 4 days, a cooler bag to put the food in (in order to deter the 'feral pigs'), pack all of this into one bag because we had to carry everything into the island from the ferry.
We arrived and set up camp 20 minutes from the holiday resort in our own deserted beach paradise. It was beautiful. That night we went and watched the wild dolphins come in and play on the jetty. It was incredible.
Day 2 also good. Got up and went trekking to the 'desert' a patch of land in the middle of the island with massive sand dunes that Jim and I tried to slide down with relatively little success but lots of fun all the same! Then the rain set in.
Day 3 we went snorkelling around the Tangalooma Wrecks. A load of ships that were deliberately sunk in order to create a wind break that now are home to loads of fishes and a few sharks thought luckily we didn't encounter one.
Day 4 packed up the tent. Jim found a new friend. A massive spider! Crawled right onto his hand as he was putting the tent down. The massive scream was my cue to realise something wasn't quite right but in fairness it was really big and hairy. Urgh! Back to the mainland.
