So today we were up reasonably early and headed to Port Nepean national park, there we caught the transporter which is essentially a tractor pulling some carriages round the park, there are various different points at which you can hop on or off, however we decided to stay on it for a complete circuit which took around an hour in total and it was well worth it as there were some stunning views and it also has quite an interesting history. It is where the refugees from Kosovo landed and one of the sites, Cheviot Beach, is where the then Prime Minister, Harold Holt went missing in 1967 and despite a huge search his body was never found.
After Port Nepean, we headed to Portsea which is another small but cool town at the end of the Mornington Peninsula, we had lunch at the Portsea hotel which is somewhat of an institution in the area and then explored the gardens, beach and jetty nearby. It was very picturesque and if I lived in Melbourne both Sorrento and Portsea would be good for a long weekend.
We left just after lunch and made our way up the other side of the peninsula and around to Phillip island which is where we are now. We are now back to camping and tonight have been to the nightly penguin parade. Phillip island has the largest colony of little penguins and each night at the parade you can watch the little penguins make their way from the sea to the beach. It is just before penguin malting time (where they stay on land for 20 days whilst they malt), so the penguins have (according to the ranger) being gorging themselves on fish and as a result there were some very plump but exceptionally cute little penguins that waddled up the beach to their burrows. Unfortunately you can't take pictures but it is definitely an experience we will remember.
I did find it quite amusing to discover that although we saw around 20 little penguins tonight (although there were more on the boardwalk) interestingly last night with no Tweedly's in the audience, 280 penguins came to shore:)
Anyway a fabulous night has been had by all and tomorrow we are continuing onto Wilsons Promontory.

Rosie Sorry we missed you at Phillip Island. We left to come home around 8am yesterday morning and the long drive home was heightened by the conversations of the young ones revisiting the events of the previous evening at the exclusive after party to celebrate! Mario, Rita and I retired gracefully around midnight nd left them to it- albeit had I been thirty years younger you could not have dragged me away! Will send you some pics soon. Have you caught up with Kirk? xxx
