We arrived in Huanchaco early in the morning and half dead from the night bus. The bus was actually quite comfortable but you can never get into a deep sleep if you're not fully lying down. There were also a crazy amount of speed humps on the road so I woke up every time we went over one. Huanchaco is also a beach town but we had travelled far from Mancora and the temperature difference was pretty extreme. What's the point of being by the beach when you have to wear hoodies and scarves?! It was also a ghost town with literally nothing to do. It felt like the start of all those zombie films where one person wakes up from a coma (or gets off a night bus) and the whole town is eerily empty. I half expected a zombie to jump out and start eating me!
There was a nearby city called Trujilo which had a bit more going on so I really don't understand why they didn't put us up in a hotel there. We had to take a "combi" to get there which is basically one of many beaten up old minivans where they squish as many people as possible on and then just stop at any point along the way when you want to get off. This was an experience because we got to travel how the locals did and it was really cheap. Once we got there we all split up because we wanted to do different things. The boys were only interested in finding a place that showed football so me and Katie went off to find a toy museum that was described in my guide book. We both have horrendous sense of direction but we managed to navigate our way to it (after walking past it a couple of times and having to ask some people for directions). It looked more like an attic than a museum but it was pretty cool if not very eerie. There were all these old scary looking dolls all over the place, some even hanging from the ceiling. There was also a huge old fashioned train set along with a few toys that even I remember from my childhood which made me feel old! It was a very small place so it only took us 15 minutes to look around. We didn't know what else to do after that because we weren't due to meet the others for another hour so we wondered around and stumbled across a big local market which was pretty cool but a bit full on as we stood out like sore thumbs being the only tourists there. On our way back we randomly came across the boys who were all sat at a barbers watching Kasper having his hair cut. It turns out they couldn't find anywhere showing the football and had been watching the haircut by what looked like the oldest barber in the world for an hour already. I couldn't quite understand this because Kasper is virtually bald anyway so it shouldn't have taken more than 5 minutes! They ended up waiting 2 hours in total! We ate dinner at a chicken place (polleria) before heading back on the bus which then broke down so we had to change buses halfway. That evening, despite the town being dead, the boys insisted on looking for somewhere to go out. They jumped into a taxi and asked the driver to take them to a club. He drove them to a strip bar at which point they had to explain that wasn't the sort of place they were after. They ended up back in Trujillo at a casino but from the sounds of it they didn't have a great night out unsurprisingly! I, on the other hand, went out to find myself a hot chocolate with Caitlin because the evenings are very cold here. The place recommended in the book was closed so we ended up going to a restaurant and it turned out to cost about £3 each which is extortionate for here but at least it warmed me up ready for bed!
Since we had a night bus we had another whole day to kill. There was some culture nearby and we opted for a trip to Chan Chan which is basically ruins in the desert made out of mud. It was a cool place and the designs made in the mud were really quite cool but we stupidly opted for a guide who was so unbelievably boring that we couldn't wait to get out of there. In fact, Kasper and I managed to make a sneaky escape from the group and whizzed round the ruins much more quickly. We still had most of the day to kill so we decided to go back to Trujillo for a wonder. The boys wanted to eat at the chicken place again but I wanted to try something different so 4 of us found a local restaurant serving a set lunch menu for just over £1 each. This included a delicious starter of potatoes covered in a cheesy spicy sauce, chicken and spaghetti for mains, freshly made lemonade and a little jelly for desert. Can't argue with that! We decided to check out the cinema to kill some time. Fortunately they do show some films in English with Spanish subtitles and the only film available at the right time was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It had Tim Burton's name on it so I thought it couldn't be bad - I couldn't have been more wrong. It was a terrible film but at least it passed some time before we had to return to catch the night bus onwards.
I can't really imagine why G Adventures would choose such a boring place for us to stay and also why we weren't located in the main town. I can only assume it was convenient to break up two night buses but it's a shame that there wasn't much to it because it really felt like a waste of time - I'd rather have had longer somewhere else.
