Having been told I am banned from writing blogs, I have come to the conclusion that when a woman says something, she actually means the total opposite!
Anyway for those avid followers scrutinising our itinerary, you will notice that Kuala Lumpur (KL) was never part of our travels. However we decided to make a slight alteration to our route since the only cheap direct flights that we could find that were consistent with our plans (and also avoiding the local aviation companies that are riddled with poor safety records) were to Vietnam. This would of involved us going back on ourselves later in the trip, which being an eco-conscious person I was obviously against, but more realistically the change was due to Sara's concerns of the unknown skin disease that had broken out in a small area of Vietnam.
So with Vietnam on ice (no that's not some sort of cocktail) and for ease of access to our next destination, we went to KL - the central hub of AirAsia (and no this is not an advertisement - I'm unfortunately not on commission but given my loyalty over the past 6 weeks I think deserve to be!)
First impressions of this metropolitan city is that it is very diverse and multicultural. This was apparent from roaming the streets where we passed through Little India, Chinatown and large designers malls. However this made my task (and current purpose?!) of finding local cuisine very difficult. Ironically the glitzy shopping centres have large food courts selling local food at reasonable prices. I can confirm the nom and spice factor are up to my desired levels (bit too much heat for Sara but she is still a work-in-progess!), but the dessert we had was so peculiar - a mound of ice on top of non-sweet jellies and then covered in various sauces, sweet corn and mango. It didn't work, but hey neither does rice pudding but we still eat it!
No trip to KL would be complete without a visit to the Petronas Towers. Tickets are on a first come first served basis so a consecutive early morning was not particularly welcomed, but the guidebook states that tickets are free so can't really complain. What a pile of rubbish that was as the exaggerated rugby posts gobbled up half our daily budget! To be fair though they are a sight to behold and you get to view the city from the adjoining sky bridge (44th floor) and also near the the pinnacle (86th floor). Unfortunately we were allocated a time at dusk so maybe didn't get to appreciate the full potential that the views have to offer.
Given that we were only here for a short space of time we didn't experience a vast amount of Malaysian culture, which you are probably not going to find in the centre of KL anyway. However it was a welcome blend of east and west, and I guess by mixing them up together, you end up lost somewhere in the middle!
