Day 16 Gibraltar
Today was spent in the British colony of Gibraltar. We arrived before sunrise to a cloudy day. Our ship had docked by the time we went up for breakfast and we saw the bottom of the massive Rock of Gibraltar. The top was obscured by clouds which we hoped would dissapate as the day got warmer.
After breakfast, we caught a shuttle cab to the city centre and set off for the cable car which would take us to the top of the rock. It was a pleasant 1 hour walk which was spent going in and out of shops. We got to the cable car, and Donna and I decided to pay the 44 British Pound to take the cable car to the top of the rock and go into the massive cave system. After about 30 mins wait were in the cable car on our way.
It is about a 5 minute trip and we found ourselves immersed in the cloud. It was a pity because we couldn't see the commanding view of Gibraltar. However when we got to the top, we were greeted by a monkey! Apparantly Winston Churchill introduced them to the rock and there are now hundreds of them. They are very confident and will snatch things off you if you're not careful. We went for a walk towards the caves which is about 800m downhill. As we were walking, a monkey jumped on Donna's back and head as it made its way onto the top of a car! Surprisingly she hardly flinched.
The caves were amazing. The main cavern acted as an amphitheater and there were about 300 seats set up for a concert. We exited the cave and walked back up the hill, passed a heap of monkeys to the cable car. Some of the cloud had gone so we got a few good photos. We headed back down and made our way back to the ship.
Once back on board we had a quiet afternoon before grabbing some drinks and sitting on our balcony for the sail away. Not long after we left port we were treated to a pod of dolphins jumping and surfing the waves directly in front of us. It was a real highlight. We got dressed and went up to dinner before the guys sat in the sports bar and watched NFL.
Tomorrow is Lisbon.
