San Juan has some great surf beaches so we took advantage and decided to get some good days in consecutively to advance our skills a bit. The board and ride out to the beach (El Remanso) costs $10 each and we could try different size boards to find what we liked.
When we were surfing at El Remanso we also had to be careful of stingrays as there were many there that would sting you on the foot in the shallow water. We saw three people get stung while we were there over the week but the locals knew to squeeze the blue venom back out which seems very painful. One lady was crying and yelling "IT HURTS, "THE BLUE HURTS" in a real panic. Nikki had a close call one day when she nearly stepped on one but thank goodness neither of us had to go through the pain of actually being stung.
The town of San Juan itself was pretty well set up for tourism and we enjoyed our time there going out to eat and drink. We met a Scottish girl called Dawn who parties like crazy. She was a real character and we ended up staying out all night with her. It was a lot of fun but she was definitely hard to keep up with. We also met our friend Dave there and spent one night with him and Dawn writing a rap song on the beach - funny times! Last we saw of Dawn that night was when we left her on the beach at 7am whilst everybody else was waking up!
One thing we unfortunately missed out on while we were there was seeing the turtles hatch. The night we wanted to do it there was no tour going. Apparently had we gone we could have seen hundreds of baby turtles hatching and walking down the beach to the water. That would have been a great sight to see. Oh well, we needed to keep moving so off to Isla de Ometepe we went.
