Apologies - the further south we are going, the hotter it is getting…and there is definitely a direct correlation to the heat and our incredible laziness…hence, no updates as we don't have much to tell you!
So, Nha Trang; It was much better than we remembered, although partly I think because we were staying a bit more in the with the other travellers. When we came to Vietnam 3 years ago, this was our first main stop and we had a lovely big hotel with private beach area. Most evenings we would go to the Sailing Club - a lovely relaxed, cool beach bar, so naturally, this was one of our first stops when we got to Nha Trang. Oh wow…we were really on a holiday budget before!! How much for a beer?? We shared one and moved on, realising we were not quite cool/rich enough to hang out there anymore.
As we'd already done the touristy thing around Nha Trang, we planned on a bit of shopping and a few afternoons by the beach…however, once we'd done the 5km round trip to the market and back (both days as - surprise surprise, that's where the post office was!), the beach was out of the question! But we did manage to get a parcel sent home with a few bits and bobs that we've been carrying around for a while. Small victories. Other than that, we worked through Season 6 of Homeland in the wonderful aircon and planned our next move to Dalat.
Dalat was a welcome change, at 1300m there was none of the heat and humidity that we've had for so long. And it was here that we met up with Claudia and Rochelle from Dorking, they've been travelling for 18 months and are slowly working their way back to the UK. We did a few little touristy bits around Dalat, but once the girls arrived, they brought the rain with them…which somewhat limited our options! We did go to the Crazy House, which, as the name suggests, was pretty crazy. You could stay there but it was quite pricey, so instead we opted to just visit - although it took us 2 attempts as the first time we went, there were 5 big tour buses outside, so we decided to try earlier the next day. Anyway, it was a fun, random building with lots of random stairways (without proper handrails!) and nooks and crannies - worth a visit. The other sights around town were a little disappointing though and not worth a mention. We didn't manage to get bikes and head out to any of the waterfalls though which was a shame, but the aforementioned rain would not have made pleasant riding weather. So, all there was left to do really, was drink beer with friends! One such rainy day took us all to a nearby train cafe (we had to relent and get a cab once the rain properly set in) and after a bit of walking around in the wrong direction, eventually found this cute little cafe in an old train carriage. We got in there in the nick of time before the heavens really opened up and forged on lovely comforting western food fit for a cold and wet day! The waiter obviously took a shine to Rochelle - when asking if we were ready to order he came up behind her, blew in her ear and said "Hello lovely, are you ready to order?"!! Very strange!!
From Dalat, we all travelled down to Mui Ne, famous for it's red and white sand dunes. Amazingly, we got our rooms upgraded to the Villa with it's own little pool…and at the time of writing, we have not really done much other than keep extending our stay by a few more nights and play a fair amount of ping pong while avoiding the rain. We had a rather epic storm the other night and couldn't move from the bar we were in for about 3 hours…the lightening hit the electricity pole not too far from us which was a little terrifying. So, that's about it really…nothing too exciting! We have a tour booked for the sand dunes tomorrow (hopefully before the rain) and then we go our separate ways the day after. James and I will probably head to Ho Chi Minh city, although we still have 3 weeks left before we fly to Thailand, so we're still in no real rush. Hopefully once it stops raining tonight, we can get another round of 18 hole crazy golf in…you get a free shot at hole 9!
Much love to you all xx
