Ron's Adventures
Hiya
Hamilton Island is a bit like Portmeirion, Wales where the 60's cult TV series The Prisoner was shot. Everyone zooms around in little golf buggies up and down the little streets and there's no escape. Our apartment came with its own golf buggy which I enjoyed very much. But it's alot hotter than Wales and there was no giant bubble chasing people on the beach.
The temperature of the sea was posted everyday and was usually about 27 degrees. It was actually warmer than many showers I've had.
We didn't do much ("too hot and humid") except eat fine food and laze around looking at the amazingly pretty people. All the staff seemed to be 18 or 19 year olds flown in from the mainland and given special training courses in being pretty and charming - kinda like participants in a some sort of 'Waiter Idol'
On our last day Ian and I went sailing on the good yacht Banjo Paterson. This 60 foot sloop has a thirty year history and sailed in a number of races. Luckily we had crew to do the hard work. Ian reminded me that the last time he was on a boat he dislocated his arm. I wasn't worried about any kinda jinx until I noticed smoke coming up from under the floor boards and a terrible smell in the air. Is it meant to be doing that, I wondered? Turns out they had been motoring along with the equivalent of the handbrake on! We made it safely to Whitehaven Beach and Chalkies beech where we snorkelled and looked at pretty fish and coral. Our rather cute Captain Tony was excited by the weather on his way back as he was able to do some 'proper sailing'. Luckily they remembered the handbrake this time.
Off to Tasmania next and sad farewell to Ian and Phil who have been very kind putting up with me camping on their sofa beds. Big thanks to them for that.
Be seeing you!
