Rohin goes around the world
Im so glad that I decided to spend the 3 days in Paris because its a city that has so much to offer the traveller. I was booked into the Three Ducks Hostel which was a 15min walk from the Eiffel tower and had its own bar. I basically chose to stay there because all the reviews said it had a great social scene and they werent wrong. meeting people was instant once I was there and you could just see what others were going to see and then do it with them.
Night 1 after many a beer a group of us headed off to see the tower light show at 1am. It was awersome but for some reason the much talked about crowds on the lawn and people trying to sell you champaign were just not there. Oh well still a good light show.
So with my full day I went with Dave and Julia to the Catacombs and amazing underground mine from the early 1700 hundres that they then filled with 5 to 6 million Parisians bones from the overcrowded cemitaries. This was done around the 1780 mark and it was just amaing to walk the 1.7kms of neatly stakced bones and skulls with some very amusing patterns as well.
Dave and I then walked via Notre Dame to the Neurve then down Champs Elysee to the Arc d Triomphe onto and up the Eiffel tour and back to our hostel. One hell of a days walking with an estimated 15 or so ground Kms covered and some 800 steps up the tour. But it was al worth it. Another night of drinking in the hostel bar and things soon got interesting. I went up to the room at some stage and found that there was somebody in my bed. There were only 2 beds left in the room without people in them and both had stuff on them, so this normally means that they are taken. So I found myself bedless and the Hostel was completly full. So Plan A was I had an offer to stay with Chriss and Belinda in their hotel room, but that got foiled by the reception guy. Plan B was wait till the bar and hostel was closed and go back up to the room and if there was any bed left, move what was on it and that one would be mine. Lukily this turned out OK and somebody had just left stuff on that bed. Cos Plan C was just keep on drinking elsewhere.
So with my last day I left my bag at the station lockers and walked through the shopping and cafe district around Notre Dame. Its pretty cool with some great little eating spots and very cheap clothes too. I was strong though and managed not to buy anything.
I took Chrissy's advice and had a Chocolate crape, man I didnt regret that at all. Had to walk a few more kms to burn it off though and then it was on the train and back to Offenburg where I am for just day before heading to my last Marathon race which just happens to be around Alpe D'Huez in France. cant wait.
