Well lets see since I have negelected the blog since I have been gone in the Outback.
Now this is no excuse, because I did have internet out there. I was just having to much fun to share with everyone!
So here we go the adventures.
Sept 21, 2009 was the first day of work, 130 kms of pavement, and aobut 160km of red dirt road. With Rusty. A older gentlemen, that liked talk radio... lets just say that i slept alot on the way out!
Let's say that when I arrived the welcomes where warm, which was nice, b/c this was gonna be my new family and home for the next couple of months.
Host family : Sean and Cath D'arcy, daughter Mollie Beetle(2.5) & Griffin(1)
The settings are a bit rough.. and not like Canada that is for sure. So the first day, unpack, and clean the kitchen get organized. It actually reminded me of the teahouse my mother used to run. Mouse, bugs, spiders, etc. And there was nothing like walking into the cool room, and see dinner. 4x 1/4 sides of beef hanging. But I did offer to make a salad for dinner. Could not just do nothing. But the shower is hot... only if you light the boiler aka the donkey. Back into my room for the first night of sleep, and to my surprise a huge huntsmen. OR so i think is huge. When I awoke there where 2 huntmens staring down at me. Then it was routine time. Feed the Chooks, water things, clean up the kitchen from the boys after breaky, have something for smoko(break) if they where in the yard.
I was asked to collect the eggs from the chooks, unfortuantly I can not do it... must be a childhood thing that I cant put my hand under them .
The first few days where hard to get use to the birds in the morning, but eventually just decided that if the birds are gonna wake me every morning that i would just get up and start working. More time to myself in the afternoons that way!
Was lucky to see Griffins first bday. Made a lovely chocolate cake. What kid can refuse chocolate cake.
Things where alot different out there. Like groceries for instance. The mail man would come once a week routating wed. and thrus. he would bring mail, groceries, beer, petro, everything. It is not like you can just jump into town to pick things up! So you have to be almost 2weeks ahead of yourself! to make sure you have enough supplies to last for that week... and the next just incase the mail truck cant make it.
We were lucky that on the footy final day that the neighbouring stations came over. So there are other ppl around just 40-100 kms away.
My first day that I got to go out mustering. I rode in the bull buggy with Tom. At first it is a bit boring. Waiting for the guys on the bikes to bring all the cattle in to the Mill. Then you push the mob out. This is when the fun starts. Bulls fighting, Mickey bulls trying to run out of the mob. Pissed of cattle that do not want to cooperate. Now to explain a little. These cattle see ppl once a year. They are not sure what we are, and do not want to be around us at all. Now a Mickey bull is a bull that has never been caught. May have gone years without getting caught, and are crazy. They are good time to chase though. So after pushing cattle in the mob for a while, boring again until something cuts out. What a wild ride, running over everything in our way to get on the shoulder of the wild beast. Now when the bulls start fighting... You get to drive into them , break it up. It is like a car accident. but so fun.
At first the nights at Lyndon where cold, blankets needed. Now it is Dec. and air conditioning needed.
I got to go to the yards a couple times and tally cattle. Bush cow, Cull cow, Steer, Mickey, Herd bull, heifer calf, bull calf, and Cleanskin. Was able to witness the killing of a cow, gutting etc. of the old girl, and mmmm dinner for the next month.
By October 17th we had the pool cleaned and ready kinda for use. Thank goodness it was starting to get warm out.
Was able to go Roo shooting a couple times. Way to much fun. Went up in the plane for a quick ride and muster. I did not get sick but did not feel great after.
Took few rides out to some other yards, to load some cattle to come home to be worked, and they are just as stubborn as the ones I grew up with.
Then the second time out mustering. I got to drive the bull buggy..... I am crazy! I got to chase cattle many times. It was a long day. Left at 6am got back to the station at about 7pm. It was hot... and the boys on the bikes where starting to run outta fuel. So Eddie, (overseer) kicked me out and left me in the middle of nowhere while the mob walked by to go and get fuel for everyone. They wanted to send me .... but when you dont know where you are to begin with it is hard. I also got called up to the front of the mob to keep an eye on a Mickey bull that has not been caught for 4 yrs. Lets just say that it had a good run... or 3. But i never lost it... it was like a point that i had to prove to the boys that I can do this. So I did. Then the thicket became to thick for me to drive through. So to the other side of the fence I went. And can you believe it ... the Mickey got away. Of course. But all in all it was the best day out there. I actually got compliments on being a natural bull buggy driver.
I also got to leave Lyndon station a couple of times. Once to go to the dash. Big party in the desert. Once to Williambury Station, 40 min. away. And the last time to town. Where I was lucky enough to pick up a new camera, and got a counter meal.
Things that I have never done or tried before:
Donkey. Actually very nice meat
Wild Sheep. Good braised !!!!
Plucked a duck.
Cut up, skinned, and cooked Kangaroo.
Chased and caught/killed a Goanna... Tastes like s*** just like Mic says in Crocodile Dundee.
And I am sure that there are other things that I have forgotten at the moment.
What else exciting that happened was one of the jackaroos went on a mill run, and never came back. Poor guy ran into a fence, broke his leg and a rib. And had to be flown out to Perth. Lets just say it was an accident that should not had happened... Poor Guy.
Other than that... I am sure there are more stories to tell, just have to see you to tell you!
I had a wonderful time, Will miss it. But it was one of the best REAL AUSSIE experiences that I have had.!!!!!
Till next time, maybe next year!
