Travelling from Towcester
Left Boston airport on a car rental bus and joined a long queue to pick up the car. The car was a convertible Pontiac and we made the sat nav work after an initial panic. Driving an automatic on the right hand side of the road must be completely natural to virtually every American, but when you drive a manual gearbox car it takes time to get used to braking instead of changing down gear to slow down. A dark, wet night on the initially busy route 93 from Boston to Manchester is not the best place to try and remember the technique, but like riding a bike it slowly came back. There was a little detour thro' a very large diner car park after I kept to the right hand lane once to often and we found ourselves off the highway and heading towards Salem, but we finally reached Manchester and found the hotel without any trouble. I thought it was a really nice hotel and, although we were the only people in the resturant as it was now getting late, we had a great meal (one of us had a huge amount of steak and several tasty beers - the other water + a salad). And so to bed at the end of our first day.
