Good evening! As you are probably aware this blog is rapidly getting out of date - looks like you were right Adam! So where we left off, it was goodbye to Fern Loft and Singapore and hello to Melaka. We donned our 'fanny packs' and made like a banana and got the bus out of there.
Melaka lies at the cultural heart of Malaysia, influenced by the Dutch, Portuguese, British, Japanese and Chinese. It basically looks like a Dutch village, windmills included, with one of the best preserved Chinatowns in Malaysia. Our hostel was really cool as it was the first time we really got to meet some other backpackers, all Brits! The hostel owner Uncle Sam hadn't slept in around 8 months but treated us really well and we loved our stop over.
That night we ate in a busy local restaurant called Capitol Satay, where we were given raw meat on sticks and had to dip them in a boiling pot of fondue peanut sauce. That's good fondue! The atmosphere was amazing and we sat at a table with some Chinese holidaymakers (we're still not quite sure what their story was!). Check out the photo.
We spent the following day wandering the old town admiring the old buildings and an old church on the hill. The weather was fantastic and the first time we really got to see the sun, it's a good job we are acclimitised to the heat but John is still sweating like some kind of farm animal! There isn't an awful lot to do in Melaka, but that's exactly the point. It was a chance to experience traditional Malaysia, seeing centuries old family run businesses that have been passed down through generations.
Just like our stay in Melaka this blog is short and sweet. Next stop Kuala Lumpur - back to insanity probably!
