Rie & Stew Are Out Of The Office
Hello from Malaysia,
After leaving Singapore we headed up to Kuala Lumpur with drinking buddies Dave & Rhian. We spent four days relaxing and drinking before heading off into the country.
From KL we went up to the Cameron Highlands, an old colonial settlement originally founded for tea plantations. We stayed for a few days in Tanah Rata a small town with a mainly Indian population. The lodgings were simple but reasonably free from dangerous wildlife. We visited a tea plantation and the Mossy Forest to experience the local environment. The climate in the highlands was really pleasant after the humidity of Singapore and KL. We enjoyed lots of fresh local tea, and found great apple pie in one of the cafes!!
After a hair-raising 5 hour minibus ride and a 3 hour boat trip in a thunder storm, we arrived at Pulau Perhentian Kecil. It was 9 at night and raining and we had to find somewhere to sleep. The only place left was in the delightful Rock Garden 'Resort', (also known as the rock bottom resort) We paid 2 quid for the pleasure of sleeping in a creature infested shed. So many beers and lots of whiskey were drunk to aid sleep. The next morning we hopped on the first taxi boat to Pulau Perhentian Besar the more sleepy and pleasant island. We found a lovely place called Everfresh that the lonely planet had slagged off, but after the previous night this was five star luxury. After some extensive bug exterminations, we made this our home for the last four nights.
To help pass the long, hot, sunny days on this beautiful paradise beach (don't be too worried it was ok, really) we went on a snorkelling trip around the shores of the islands. The crystal clear waters were perfect, we saw loads of tropical fish, turtles, jelly fish (b'stards stung Stew, not badly) and Black Tipped Reef Sharks, thats right folks we've been swimming with SHARKS !!!!!
The island was a bit of a zoo with the following wildlife spotted (of which most try to bite)....
Spiders, Mosquitos, Small & Monster Ants, Large Lizards, Huge Lizards, Nemo Fish, Scorpions (Sm, M & XL) Condors/Eagles, bats (S,M,L & XL) in our roof and room, stingrays, crabs, a cat, geckos, frogs (sorry Michelle) and monkeys.
Glad to be back on the mainland with just mosquitos.
Next we're off into Thailand, not sure how and where yet, keep ya posted.
Enjoy or hope you enjoyed your summer hol's.
Love,
M&S XXXX
