Exploring the known and unknown
Day 21
May 11 2013
Ben Luc- Saigon-Phan Thiet
A bad night in a hot room. The ceiling fan worked fine but blew hot air around; the only cooling was supplied by myself by perspiration and moving air. At 6 30am I was ready to roll and arrived at the bike shop in Saigon by 8 am thanks to the GPS. The distance being 30 km took me more than an hour, although there was less traffic than usual. The workshop was open and two young guys went over the bike replacing the clutch cable, getting the horn working, oil change , steering bearing adjustment , adjust chain and lubricant etc. While I had some breakfast next to the workshop (they were working on the pavement and I was eating on the pavement) I could observe their on-goings. By 10 Am I was on my way out of town, again thankful I have a GPS to show me the way. The plan was to head for the mountains to Dalat city. Having watched Top Gear's "Vietnam" issue I knew what was in front of me. It would be a slow trip as the bike is only 110 cc and has a top speed of about 75km/hour.
Just before the turnoff to Dalat I pulled over into a servo for fuel and notice a very soft rear tire. In fact it was nearly flat. No wonder I felled some wobbles earlier on. Adjacent to the servo was a small eatery and a tire fixing place so while I enjoyed a cool drink they were sweating over my bike and charged me $1.00 for fixing it. Incidentally, the total bill of the bike check over and replacement of parts came to 410.000Dong which is just over $20.00. After studying the map I made the decision not to go to Dalat but to stay along the coast. A few weeks ago I had broken a tooth in half and today for the first time I felt some discomfort. I had it looked at in Thailand and would be a major repair job which would be carried out over several days. I need to push on to Hanoi just in case I run out of time. By 5 pm I arrived in Phan Thiet near Mui Ne right on the coast and found a nice small place right on the main street on one side and the beach on the other. Within 10 minutes I was in the water to enjoy cool swim ? forget it, the temperature of the water was at least 30-32 degrees.
I felt very tired this afternoon and pulled over into a type of rest stop, the best I have ever seen. Cold drinks on sale and dozens of hammock supplied. I actually had a short sleep I one of them. Great idea.
