The Mekong Delta
The prime rice growing area of Vietnam, the Mekong Delta is a watery landscape of green fields and tiny villages, crisscrossed by 1000's of small canals and rivulets all fed by the mighty Mekong River which flows from its source in Tibet and winds through several countries until it reaches the sea at the most southerly point of Vietnam.
Its inhabitants I had met before. A smiling easygoing and friendly lot of people. Last year I traveled through the area but noticed I had missed a lot of what it had to offer.
Independence comes at a price as you could ride past some very interesting site without knowing it. Sometimes it is better to let you set ideas relax and just book a tour.
For a mere $15 you are kept occupied for 12 hours touring the area and being introduced to village life. Today I did such a thing. Picked up at 8 am by a small bus I was on soon on my way to the floating market of Ben Tre. Besides the market Ben Tre is famous for its production of coconut candy which is sold right throughout the country at the many roadside stalls.
The town was reached by boat. After visiting some factories making rice popcorn and the famous coconut candy the boat continued along the canals(klongs) a scenes reminiscent of many Vietnam war movies were US patrol boats used these canals.
The hours long trip ended with a transfer to rowing boats as the canals where getting too small for the larger boat I was in. We ended up in a small village, the lunch was included and surprisingly good. From there we got on some pushbikes riding along dikes and though villages until we reached another boat heading for Vinh Long, a place where I had stayed last year. Now I had come full circle as I walked along the main street feeling like I was part of a group of sheep. I had seen groups like this last year and wondered why people were entering by boat form one side – walk the main street and step on board the same boat and the end of the village. Am glad I had the opportunity to stay there for the night an observe the morning market were you could see anything that has legs being traded. Anyway these trips, although very touristy are worthwhile and after all, even if I don’t like the title- I am a tourist

Lin Oranje getint toch wel. Je had best mogen lachen voor het vogeltje ;-)
Rob Hee Maat, I flew overhead the mekong delta just a couple of weeks ago, on board a cargo 747. Stunning view from the cockpit, I'll send you the picture, perhaps you can add it. Must have been a wonderful experience, and I love that hat! You can see it is really providing plenty of shade, and not nearly as hot as my aussie burmah hat! Regards
Dre You're a perfect candidate to join the flower trade!! Awesome.
