We spent the balance of July 5th after leaving Moab, in traversing through central Utah. We arrived early evening at Great Basin National Park, which is located just across the Nevada border. We spent the evening, camped in the park, then the next morning hiking up the valley toward Wheeler Peak.
The temps were cool, in the 70's in the evening and next morning, and the overnight lows was in the 50's. Gorgeous weather in my book.
But what was most interesting is that all of our preconceived notions of Nevada were thrown out the window. There was plentiful water in the park (as the attached pic attests). The vegetation was not mighty forest, but was juniper/pine, transitioning to spruce/fir and aspen above 7,500' or so. There is even a glacier on Wheeler Peak. This is a beautiful place.
The rest of the day was spent driving across central Nevada toward Tahoe, and much of East Central Nevada was bestowed with snow capped peaks and fairly fertile valleys in between. It wasn't until we were within a hundred miles or so of Fallon, NV that the climate became more arid, like what we think of Nevada being like.
