July 4th. We got an early start with the Jeep, 4-wheeled up very rugged roads into Yankee Boy Basin, in Uncompahgre National Forest, under the shadow of Mt. Sneffels (14,150'). The jeep was only a means to an end, the main goal was to attain the Blue Lakes Pass on the edge of the Mt. Sneffels Wilderness Area. This wiill be no small task for the young-ins.
The hike was almost 4 miles round trip, but the main challenge was the elevation starting at ~11,500 and topping out at ~13,000 on Blue Lakes Pass. The kids were troupers, but it was slow going at a little over 1 MPH.
The view was well worth it. I have been to many beautiful locations in my travels, but the view from the top of Blue Lakes Pass is the most spectacular that I have ever seen. The only view that might beat it would be the one from the top of Mt. Sneffels, which will have to wait for when the kids are teenagers.

OCR14a Yep. We've been to the top of Sneffels, and it is indeed a crazy view from up there. You're right about the view fro Blue Lakes Pass though; that's pretty spectacular as well. That area is definitely the most beautiful place I've ever been to, as far as mountain views goes. It doesn't hurt that we have to drive up that road to get there either. It's a fun ride, and then the waterfalls among the flowers, and then hiking up there ....crazy beautiful!!
