Last night I slept the entire plane ride from Dubai to Amsterdam. At Schiphol Amsterdam International I was questioned at great lengths by airport security prior to boarding the flight back home to Portland. They could not quite grasp that I was on the last leg of a trip around the world. Even more concerning were my previous destination points. "Why were you in China?" the officer kept asking. I kept responding because I wanted to see the Great Wall. "Do you have an itinerary you could show me?" I did not. I had a paper itinerary but I left sections of it with each country I departed. All I had was the receipt for the Trader's Hotel in Dubai, "So, you were in Dubai after China?" "No, I went from China to Malaysia", I replied. At this point another, more senior security official entered the conversation. I became quite flustered, having to repeat everything I told the first officer. About five minutes later a third individual dressed in street clothes pulled away the other two for a moment and then forced me to repeat everything a third time trying to catch me in a lie. They went through my bag and my digital camera. After scrolling through about forty or fifty monkey photos the guard switched off the camera and let me through to gather my luggage and my composure and board the plane. I was the last person on board. The guy sitting in the aisle seat next to me asked, "Were you worried that you were going to miss the flight? I said no, I was held up in security.
