This morning we had an early wake up call for our visit to Prion Island. Home to the nesting Wandering Albatross. These birds have the longest wingspan of any bird (averaging from 2.5 to 3.5m). They spend most of their lives at sea and only come ashore to breed or feed their chicks. How on earth to describe today..... I knew South Georgia was special, but WOW!!! Our first landing on South Georgia was at Salisbury Plain which is home to over 100,000 King penguins. Some reports say up to 120,000. I've never experienced anything like it! This morning we arrived at the British town of Stanley on the eastern side of the Falkland Islands. There were a number of shuttle buses arranged to take us from the port into the town or out to Gypsy Cove, but a few of us decided to walk to the cove ourselves given that Expedition Leader Julio said it was only about 2kms and should only take about 20 minutes. The big day is getting closer! Today I moved from the Antarctica Hostel in town up to the Hotel Ushuaia which is my joining hotel for the cruise. The hotel itself is very nice and has lovely views over the town and the Beagle Channel but it's a fair hike down to the shopping and restaurant areas of town and a tiring one back up (about 20 minutes up steep slopes and stairs).
