Vicky got up really early to call the campervan people about the wing mirror, find a church and find some internet. The rest of us stayed in bed for a bit longer before getting up and dressed. When Vicky got back I drove us the 4km to the car park for the glacier. The weather was abysmal but we layered up and put our waterproofs on before choosing one of the shorter walks for views of the glacier. When we got to the viewing platform it was certainly amazing, but I think we had been expecting something different. There was lots of low cloud around which made it really majestic, but also obscured our view of some of the ice. I think there is some equally good snow and ice related scenery in the Swiss Alps to be honest!
We did another short walk to get a different perspective on the glacier, but it was a similar view really. When we got back to the van it started to absolutely tip it down even more so we got changed out of our wet clothes - I was wet underneath my 'waterproof' jacket, and so was my phone which had been in my pocket. The camera on it has now clouded up with condensation so I have no means of taking pictures, and the screen has gone really dark so I can barely see what I am writing!
After the glacier we popped to a supermarket to buy ourselves some Easter treats before having some lunch and setting of on our six hour journey to Wanaka.
The views on the journey were absolutely incredible. We drove along beautiful coastline, then wound through imposing mountains past rivers and waterfalls, then on open flat road with huge mountain ranges on either side, and finally drove around huge lakes surrounded by hills and mountains. My poor description doesn't really do it justice but I can see why so many people do driving holidays here, the views really are stunning.
We finally made it to Wanaka at around 7pm. I added the final layer to our traffic light jelly, although the ketchup bottle had fallen into the jelly in transit leaving a ketchup bottle shape hole.
The others have gone to the local YHA to use the net but I was on the phone to Ed when they left so I have stayed behind with a book. It's only 9.30pm but I am shattered from all the driving!
