Our final stop on the South Island was Blenheim, where we arrived at about 7pm, but not before we'd walked the one hour trek that wasn't really a trek up to the Franz Josef Glacier to get a better look at it! We pottered along by ourselves at 8.30am to find that it was much more impressive up close than we'd appreciated when we'd taken quick pictures of it the day before. As we looked up and gauged the size of it, we were in shock to see that three little dots were actually three men attached to the glacier whilst hacking some kind of stair system into it! We encountered numerous groups on the way back from the Glacier that must have been about to climb it, very impressive if so.
As the tourists arrived and the sun peeked out from behind the clouds we made our way to the Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes in Punakaiki, although we didn't really see the Blow Holes, maybe they were best viewed at high tide. The Pancake Rocks were pretty cool though, although more like a 3D puzzle than pancakes.
The rest of the day was filled with driving, although fortunately it was along coastal roads and the sun was shining down, which made it all the more enjoyable. We arrived in Blenheim at 7.40pm and had to race across the road to the Tavern for last food orders at 8! We also got a free drink because of where we staying, result! It was also much better grub than the food we'd had in Haast, and cheaper! A good day was had by all!
