Well I made it to the infamous Byron Bay, although it was a mighty fleeting visit! The Greyhound dropped me off at about 3pm: after remembering to put my watch forward I checked in just down the road at the YHA. They handed my sheets, and the stay didn't start well, with long hair having to be pulled out from between them! I moved past it though!
As soon as I'd wolfed down a much-needed dry bread sarnie I headed to the beach and tried to see the lighthouse, as the lady at the information centre it was doable before dark. The track went on and on and on though: I ended up seeing a few other places including Palm Beach and Byron Beach, but the lighthouse just seemed to stay elusively in the distance as the sun beat down on my now-sweaty forehead. Eventually I couldn't find the path and thought it best to head back towards the hostel as I wasn't sure when it would be dark, and there were a couple of isolated places to walk through on the track. Another failure! But I got a picture of the lighthouse, and this morning before I left I bought a $1 postcard with it on the front to prove I'd seen it, even if I hadn't stood at the most easterly point of Australia!
Left there at 11 this morning to head for Coffs Harbour: a fleeting visit maybe, but long enough. Whilst nowhere near as tacky as Coolangatta or Surfers Paradise (ick!), it was a definite tourist spot, but alas I must remember I AM A TOURIST!
